The Hiiu-Suuremõisa manor was first mentioned in 1519 as an order manor. Ebba Margareta von Stackelberg commanded the building of the manor’s grand two-storey baroque castle between 1755 and 1760. Added to the building in the 1770s were the one-storey wings which made it one of the largest and grandest manors in Estonia at the time, with 64 rooms. At the turn of the 18th century the manor belonged to the infamous Otto Reinhold von Ungern-Sternberg, alias the Count of Ungru. He was well known for driving ships passing Hiiumaa onto the rocks through the use of false lighthouses so as to be able to go and plunder their treasures. After its dispossession the manor building was adopted as a school; it is currently used for both basic and vocational education. Photo no. 1: Kristiina Hellström
